Our Vision
The Climate Solutions for Health Lab is committed to work on ways to improve human health while simultaneously solving the climate crisis. Our goal is to provide science that can advance meaningful policy change. We strive for a future where all life benefits from lessening our environmental footprint, while expanding creative solutions (our handprint) on the planet.

Meet the Team Leader
Jonathan Patz, MD, MPH
Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor
John P. Holton Chair of Health and the Environment
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Jonathan Patz studies how climate change affects public health and how climate mitigation measures can have co-benefits for health and environmental justice. With a background in medicine, Jonathan has dedicated his career to investigating how climate change, human health, and ecosystem health interact. Through this dedication, Jonathan was elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine and shared in the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize as an author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In mitigating climate change, Jonathan sees the greatest health opportunity of our time.
Meet Our Team
Research Scientist | Outreach Program Manager
I am a writer and researcher for the Climate Solutions for Health Lab and also the Outreach Program Manager for NASA Health and Air Quality Applied Sciences Team HAQAST, since summer of 2021. With an interdisciplinary background in microbiology and science policy, I use research to find solutions to environmental and health challenges.
Senior Scientist, Climate & Health at Natural Resources Defense Council | Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Population Health Sciences
I work to advance understanding of the health harms and financial costs of climate change through applied research, policy advocacy, teaching, and public communication. As an environmental epidemiologist I am interested in addressing complex climate and health challenges in the U.S. and India, focusing on ways to strengthen the health arguments for mitigation and adaptation.
Research Scientist
I am an interdisciplinary environmental health scientist focused on sustainable food systems research with dual appointments on campus at SAGE and Soil Health, and Agroecological Living Lab. I aim to integrate social, natural, and health science methods to solve modern complex challenges at the intersection of agriculture, climate change, nutrition, and sovereignty. My work takes me to faraway places, and small towns across Wisconsin, as I seek to build relationships in the process of advancing applied research to protect planetary health.
Researcher II
As part of the Health-Oriented Transportation Team I create and analyze population-level models of the relationships between household demographics, active travel, and health outcomes. I believe tremendous population health gains can be made simply by increasing the amount of walking and cycling in everyday life. I hope that my work inspires policymakers and communities to understand the importance of active travel from a public health perspective and to invest in transportation networks that promote active travel.
Outreach Specialist
I work in outreach and communication for the Climate Solutions for Health Lab. With a background in network development, neuroscience, and communications, I am passionate about building sustainable relationships. I believe communicating scientific information an accessible and relatable way is a critical part of fostering these connections and working toward a collective future.
Postdoc
My research focuses on quantifying the air quality health benefits of the transition to a clean energy economy in the United States. I first became interested in climate change after seeing the effects of coral bleaching while scuba diving growing up. That initial exposure to the harms of climate change has evolved into a commitment to researching and promoting the benefits of addressing climate change.
PhD Student
I conduct community-oriented research at the interface of environmental justice, energy justice, and environmental health. Working towards environmental justice and health equity requires fully integrated interdisciplinary approaches and considerations of community engagement. This will not only solve big picture environmental injustice issues but will also give low-income and BIPOC communities the power, voice, and opportunities, to ensure the right to an equitable, healthy, and sustainable environment extends to all.
PhD Student
I study persistent colonial city design of Kampala, Uganda, and air pollution inequalities using low-cost air quality sensors. This is in addition to working with research groups and policymakers to design targeted air pollution management policies in East Africa. Breathing clean air is the most basic and important human right, and my goal is to see everyone achieve that human right.
PhD Student
I am from Puerto Rico and a the Elliot Dick Fellow in the Population Health Sciences-Epidemiology program. I joined the lab in the Fall of 2023, and my work will focus on understanding the health impacts of climate change in Puerto Rico. Through my work, I aspire to increase awareness of the various environmental issues that affect the Island and help mitigate their impacts on the health of residents.
PhD Student
I am a PhD student focusing on climate mitigation policy, specifically how to maximize the health and equity co-benefits of climate action. Coming from both a science and philosophy background, I understand the importance of seeing the connections between issues to fully understand problems and solutions in a systems lens. I care deeply about public health, the environment, and justice, all of which drive my work to create policies that save and improve lives.
Research Assistant
I began as a Data Analyst in the Patz Lab in August 2022 and graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Data Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in December 2023. I specialize in regression analysis and time series data visualization, focusing on improving accuracy and reducing costs for air monitoring systems.
Research Assistant
I am an undergraduate research assistant focusing on sustainable agriculture and food systems for the Climate Solutions for Health Lab. As a junior majoring in Global Health with minors in Educational Policy and Public Policy, I aspire to address disparities of health at the intersection of climate and justice. I am deeply committed to challenging the institutional structures of power that turn factors such as zip code, race, socioeconomic status, and more into determinants of health outcomes.
Research Assistant
I am a third-year undergraduate student majoring in Global Health with a minor in Environmental Studies. I joined The Climate Solutions For Health Lab in September 2023, and I work specifically on researching and analyzing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for its impacts on climate, health, and equity. As a student of Global Health, I am passionate about the intersection of health in all forms and how it is influenced by socioeconomic factors. Through my research, I hope to achieve healthier, more equitable living conditions for people on a local and global scale.
Research Assistant
I am a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in Political Science with a certificate in Health Policy. I joined the Patz lab in September 2023 to analyze the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and create policy recommendations that consider health, equity, and the environment. My work in the Patz lab allows me to examine the intersection of climate and human health through real-world climate policies. I hope to utilize my passion for public health by exploring the different ways policy can impact the environment and address health equity.
Research Assistant
I am a fourth year majoring in sociology and environmental studies. Through my work in the Patz Lab, I am able to examine the social interworkings of the environmental health movement. Specifically, I am passionate about how we can better inform the public about the relationship between environmental and human health.
